L’Organizzazione mondiale della sanita’ (Oms) ha avviato un programma di partnership sanitaria tra Africa ed Europa, l’African Partnerships for Patient Safety (Apps), abbinando 14 ospedali africani ad altrettante strutture distribuite tra Inghilterra, Francia e Svizzera. I risultati gia’ si vedono in termini di calo di infezioni ospedaliere e sicurezza del paziente.
Un esempio e’ il Church of Uganda Hospital, a Kisiizi, con 250 posti letto nel sud-ovest del Paese. Solo due anni fa, spiega l’Oms dal suo sito, la sicurezza del paziente era un concetto oscuro e quasi impossibile da applicare nella pratica per lo staff dell’ospedale. Il controllo delle infezioni era molto difficile. Inoltre i panni sporchi erano lavati a mano e gli inceneritori non erano in grado di gestire in modo sicuro i rifiuti.
Ora invece l’ospedale ha un proprio sistema di controllo delle infezioni professionale, il primo nel Paese, e tutto lo staff, incluso il team della lavanderia e manutenzione, sa cosa fare per prevenire infezioni e assicurare cure piu’ sicure, grazie alla costruzione di due inceneritori per la gestione dei rifiuti e un nuovo sistema di lavanderia industriale acquistato con i fondi del programma Oms.
Il Kisiizi Hospital e’ stato accoppiato al Countess of Chester Hospital in Inghilterra. Il programma e’ stato avviato nel 2009 in risposta alle richieste di 46 ministri della Sanita’ africani. Oggi l’Oms ha lanciato, sempre nell’ambito del progetto, anche il ‘pacchetto risorse’, in modo che ogni ospedale africano o in qualsiasi paese in via di sviluppo possa creare le proprie partnership con altri ospedali per migliorare la sicurezza dei pazienti. Ma ad imparare sono stati anche gli ospedali europei.
”Abbiamo appreso molto dal lavorare con i nostri colleghi africani – commenta Sarah Hoyle, coordinatrice del programma a Chester – soprattutto sulle competenze del lavoro di squadra, le abilita’ di comunicazione e nel risolvere i problemi”.
